Purpose of an Interview

Purpose of an Interview

It is important to remember that the purpose of the interview is a two-way street, for the employer to find out if you are the best candidate for the job, and to find out if this is a good opportunity for you.

The employer will ask interview questions of you to answer these questions for the hiring manager or company:

Can you do the job?

  • Do you have the appropriate background, including education, skills, and experience?
  • Do you have the expertise needed to make you one of our best?
  • Are you able to learn and adapt?

Will you do the job?

  • Do you want to work for this company long-term, or is this just a stepping stone?
  • Do your future goals and plans align with ours?
  • Are you motivated or seem lazy?

Will you fit in?

  • Do you work well with others?
  • How do you respond to supervision and criticism?
  • Do you have the skills to balance where their team is currently weak?
  • Will your personality and character match well with other team members?

Like the interviewer, you too want questions answered to make sure it is a good opportunity for you. Below are some topics to think about while you are coming up with your own questions.

  • What will my typical workday to look like?
  • What do I want to do with this position? Is this the path I want to go?
  • What kind of work schedule or work setting do I want?
  • Will I relocate for a position?
  • What is my ideal boss?
