How Often Should a Resume be Updated?

Has it been a while since you pulled out that document with your previous job accomplishments, you know, the document they call a resume? Whether you are looking for your first job, reviewing new opportunities, or currently employed, your resume is a critical tool in applying for any job.

Don’t just write a resume and then forget about it, realize it is a work-in-progress and deserves attention. It is critical to update your resume, especially in a tough or competitive market. Make sure you are always presenting yourself in the best way possible, with the most up to date information.

Once you are in the work force, you will want to update your resume several times a year. It is recommended to update your resume after each new project, while the details are fresh in your head. Do you remember a project you worked on 10 months ago? I sure don’t, at least not specific details. If you wait to update your resume it is harder to remember critical points. Whenever you have something to add to your resume, do it as soon as possible. The point of a resume is to broadcast your accomplishments by giving specific examples: what you did and how you did it.

If you are not working, it is especially valuable to keep your resume up to date. If you have been job hunting longer than three months, try to find a part-time or temporary position within your field to help close that gap. Contact a staffing/recruiting agency such as iMPact Business Group to get assistance in finding a job (contract, temp to hire, or perm). Another option would be volunteering, this shows motivation and involvement in your field. Finding a volunteer opportunity, in an appropriate field isn’t always easy, but it is an excellent addition to a resume while you are not working.

Your resume is a marketing tool for you to show your strengths and skills to potential employers. Make sure yours is always a powerful, up to date, asset.
