[Video] 7 Resume Dos and Don’ts

  1. Do: Include approximately 5 bullets under each job showing your responsibilities. The bullets should also include your role in any projects, the tools/technology you worked with and any achievements.
Don’t use the same responsibilities for each job.
  1. Do: According to Monster.com you should keep your resume at 1-3 pages max. I agree with this! You want to hold the audiences’ attention.
Don’t: If your employment does not fit on three pages, then don’t include more than the last 10-15 years of work history, or reduce the amount of bullet points. Resumes that are lengthy tend to be redundant in content or wordy with “fluff” or non-relevant information.
  1. Do: Account for any work history gaps i.e. (From 2012-2013 finished Bachelor Degree etc.).
Don’t: Leave parts of your work history unexplained.
  1. Do: If you worked a contract role; indicate that on your resume.
Don’t: Make yourself appear job hoppy. Employers look at number of job changes.
  1. Do: Put your City and State location on your resume. Recruiters, HR and Hiring Managers need to know where you live. If you are open to relocating, you can put this on your resume as well.
Don’t: Use an unprofessional email address on your resume. “sexymama@” might be fun with your friends, but will turn off a potential employer. Use a professional looking email such as last@. There are many sites such as gmail and yahoo where you can set up a free email address. Also don’t forget to check your spam folder so you don’t miss an email from a potential employer.
  1. Do: Make sure your LinkedIn profile matches your resume in terms of job titles, dates and employment. Hiring managers will cross check.
Don’t include your entire work history on your resume if it’s too lengthy or not relevant to the position you are applying for. Employers will go online and look at your LinkedIn for more info if they are interested.
  1. Do: Be cautious of social media photos that may be public on the internet. What you do in your personal life is your business but do know that hiring managers can do a quick and easy google search to learn more about you.
Don’t post anything publicly you would not want HR to see.
