Making your search too narrow
Don’t keep your search too narrow to only include people like yourself or people currently on your team. Having a diversified workforce will improve the chances that you will receive applications from talented applicants who would otherwise not consider your organization. A diverse workforce will build your employer brand, increases productivity, encourages personal growth and makes employees think more independently.
Not knowing what you want
You can’t expect to interview candidates about what they want, if you don’t. Not having a clear idea of what you are looking for can be misleading and lead to a bad hiring decision. An interview scorecard can be used in screenings and interviews to determine if a candidate can fulfill the requirements of your job. List your criterion, ratings and comments. Also, include columns for strengths and concerns about the candidate.
Having an inconsistent hiring process
Having consistent selection criteria for each candidate evaluation will lead to consistent results, and allow you to determine which criteria were effective in the decision process. You will need to define the goals and standards of the process and determine what competencies are important to your jobs and to the organization. Having a standardized hiring process will ensure that everyone on the hiring team will be using the same reference points in the decision-making process.
Not having a clearly defined company culture
Showcase your company culture; the beliefs and behaviors that determine how a company’s employees and management interact and handle outside business transactions. This can also include benefits, salary, perks and flexibility. It’s important to identify if a potential job candidate will be a good fit with your company culture. Essentially what it means is that the employees’ beliefs and behaviors are in alignment with their employer’s core values and company culture. Once you have defined your company culture, be sure to express it everywhere a potential candidate might look; on your website, job postings, marketing materials etc
